Cuenta con más turistas extranjeros que otros centros turísticos a lo largo de la Costa de la Luz en la provincia de Huelva, en parte debido a su proximidad con el Algarve y su posición como la localidad más occidental a lo largo de la costa andaluza.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Situada en la desembocadura del río Guadiana, el segundo río más largo de Europa, el desarrollo de Ayamonte ha estado íntimamente ligado, debido a su posición fronteriza, con Portugal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hasta los años 1990, ocupó Ayamonte una posición privilegiada para cruzar la frontera española-portuguesa, con sus frecuentes ferries cruzando el río hacia Vila Real de San Antonio en Portugal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;En 1991 se inauguró, dos kilómetros al norte de Ayamonte. Un impresionante puente de suspensión nuevo, cual se llevó de la ciudad el tráfico transfronterizo y que hoy conecta a la autopista que une Huelva con el Algarve y la ciudad de Sevilla. El trayecto desde Ayamonte hasta Faro en el Algarve, es ahora de tan sólo 45 minutos. Con la empresa barquera Transportes del Guadiana, siguen yendo Ferries a Vila Real en Portugal, cuales salen regularmente desde el Muelle de Portugal en el centro Ayamonte. Desde Vila Real hay frecuentemente autobuses hacia el Algarve.&lt;a href="http://www.viva-costa-de-la-luz.com/descubra-la-costa-de-la-luz/ayamonte.html"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;El centro es un buen lugar para dar un agradable paseo, ya que muchas de sus estrechas calles son peatonales. Estas pequeñas enlazadas, preciosas plazas, cuales se encuentran escondidas, pero llena de cafés y bares concurridos, sirven el característico marisco de Huelva Costa de la Luz. Visite la elegante Plaza de la Laguna, cual ofrece una buena variedad de sitios donde comer con terrazas al aire libre. Junta a la plaza principal y el Paseo de la Ribera, se encuentra el puerto marítimo y más adelante el muelle del ferry. En el casco antiguo está la Iglesia de San Salvador del siglo XV, merece la pena visitarla por su torre memorable con unas vistas magníficas hacia Portugal. Hay similares buenas vistas desde la torre de la iglesia de San Francisco del siglo XVI, cual queda cerca.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;Ayamonte está rodeada de áreas protegidas donde viven animales salvajes. Las Marismas del Guadiana y los pantanos de la desembocadura del Guadiana son ricos en aves, como garzas, cigüeñas y flamencos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;El Parador cuenta con un excelente restaurante y habitaciones con magníficas vistas sobre el río Guadiana hasta Portugal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;La playa más cercana está en el nuevo complejo de Isla Canela, a cinco minutos en coche del centro de Ayamonte. Cuenta con un tramo particularmente amplio de playa arenosa, con chiringuitos, sombrillas y hamacas de alquiler y duchas. Es un complejo de crecimiento rápido, con numerosos nuevos edificios de apartamentos turísticos, así como un gran hotel, el Riu Canela y un campo de golf. It has more foreign tourists than other resorts along the Costa de la Luz in Huelva province, partly due to its proximity to the Algarve and its position as the westernmost resort along the Andalucian coast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Situated on the estuary of the Rio Guadiana, the second longest river in Europe, Ayamonte’s development has been inextricably linked to its position on the border with Portugal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Until the 1990s, Ayamonte occupied a prime position for crossing the Spanish-Portuguese border, with its frequent ferries across the river to Vila Real de San Antonio in Portugal. In 1991 an impressive new suspension bridge was opened two kilometres north of Ayamonte that took away the town’s cross-border traffic on what is now a motorway linking the Algarve with Huelva city and Seville. The journey from Ayamonte to Faro on the Algarve now takes a mere 45 minutes. Ferries still go to Vila Real in Portugal with the boat company Transportes del Guadiana, which runs regular boats from the Muelle de Portugal in the centre of Ayamonte. From Vila Real there are frequent buses to the Algarve.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The centre is a good place to take a leisurely stroll, as many of its narrow streets are pedestrianised. These link small, pretty plazas, which are tucked away but full of busy pavement caf?s and bars serving great seafood characteristic of the Huelva Costa de la Luz. Visit the elegant Plaza de la Laguna, for a good choice of eating places with outdoor seating. Next to the main square, the Paseo de la Ribera, is the harbour and further along is the ferry dock. In the old town is the fifteenth-century Iglesia de San Salvador, worth a visit for its memorable tower with superb views across to Portugal. There are similar good views from the tower of the sixteenth-century San Francisco church nearby.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ayamonte is surrounded by protected areas teeming with wildlife. The Marismas del Guadiana, the marshes of the Guadiana estuary, are rich in birdlife, including herons, storks and flamingos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Parador has an excellent restaurant and rooms with great views over the Guadiana river and across to Portugal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The nearest beach is the new resort of Isla Canela, five minutes’ drive away from the centre of Ayamonte. It boasts a particularly wide stretch of sandy beach, with chiringuitos (summer beach bars), parasols and hammocks for hire and showers. It is a fast-growing resort, with many new holiday apartment blocks, as well as a big hotel, the Riu Canela, and a golf course.
